The inspiring story of building Soul Stories Luxury Villas & Resort near Dhanaulti, overcoming financial challenges, and creating a hospitality business rooted in nature.
A Dream Born During an Uncertain Time
For Madhavi Madaan, building a retreat in the Himalayas was a long-held dream. She and her husband, Anurag Madaan, were involved in the exhibition and trade show business, but they wanted to create a peaceful getaway surrounded by nature.
When COVID-19 disrupted their existing industry, Madhavi found an opportunity to pursue that dream. She discovered land in Chalchala village near Dhanaulti, Uttarakhand, and began planning a vacation home that could eventually welcome guests.
The Challenge of Building in the Hills
The journey was not easy. Their original plan involved friends, but when others withdrew, raising the necessary capital became a major challenge. Madhavi eventually sold a property in Delhi NCR to fund the project.
Construction brought another obstacle: water scarcity in the hills. Rather than proceeding with a conventional concrete structure, the couple chose an eco-conscious design featuring wooden cottages and a glass house.
Their approach reflected an important lesson for aspiring resort owners: the natural environment should influence not only the location but also the way a hospitality property is designed and operated.

From a Personal Holiday Home to a Hospitality Business
Soul Stories opened in December 2022. The property initially partnered with StayVista before the owners took over management themselves in November 2023.
They subsequently expanded the accommodation with additional cottages and an outdoor lounge, reopening the property in its updated form in March 2024.
The resort developed an identity centred on art, privacy, nature, and carefully managed guest experiences.
Building a Business with a Purpose
For the Madaan family, the project was about more than commercial returns. Supporting local livelihoods was an important part of their vision.
The resort employed people from nearby villages and established clear guest rules to protect the peaceful atmosphere of the property. Water conservation was another priority because of the limited availability of water in the region.
Their experience demonstrates that running a nature retreat involves more than beautiful views. Owners must balance guest expectations, operational costs, environmental considerations, staffing, and long-term business sustainability.

Lessons for Aspiring Resort Owners
The journey of Soul Stories offers several practical lessons:
-
Start with a clear vision: Understand what makes your property different from conventional hotels.
-
Plan your finances carefully: Unexpected funding and construction challenges can affect even well-conceived projects.
-
Adapt to the environment: Design decisions should account for local resources, climate, and terrain.
-
Create a distinctive guest experience: Nature, architecture, art, and personal service can become powerful differentiators.
-
Support the local community: Hiring locally and respecting the surrounding environment can strengthen a property's relationship with its destination.
Conclusion: Turning a Dream into a Destination
The story of Madhavi and Anurag Madaan shows how a personal dream can evolve into a distinctive hospitality venture. By overcoming funding difficulties, adapting their construction approach, and creating a retreat inspired by its surroundings, they brought Soul Stories to life near Dhanaulti.
For entrepreneurs considering a resort in Uttarakhand, their journey is a reminder that success begins with a vision but depends on practical decisions, resilience, thoughtful design, and a commitment to the guest experience.
